Ongoing Management
Planting |
|
Garlic is generally planted between late September and early November, allowing the roots to go dormant before Winter.
Plant the individual cloves 2-3” deep, 6-8” apart, with 12-18” between rows.
Harvesting |
|
From June thru July, watch your plants until half of the leaves begin to die back. At this point, harvest the garlic by pulling gently on the stalk. Shake off the excess dirt: do not wash the bulbs. Leave the stalks on the bulb for the curing process.
Cure the garlic by either hanging it, or laying it on cardboard in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place such as an attic, a barn, or a garage. The garlic needs to cure for about two weeks. After curing, shake off the remaining dirt.
For softneck varieties, after curing, you can leave the stalks attached and braid them together for hanging.
Site Selection & Preparation |
|
Garlic does best in well-draining soil with high levels of organic matter.
