$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Part 3 - Ongoing Management $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ongoing Management

Weed Control & Mulching.

Insect & Disease Control.

Fertilization

Not needed, and should be avoided: may inhibit flowering.

Watering

Water regularly in 1st Summer; not needed thereafter. Drought tolerant once established.

Pruning / Cutting Back

When pruning, never cut into woody part unless it is dead.

The book noted below, Pruning Simplified (pgs 88-89), is good to read regarding this.

denotes a different approach for Spring pruning. That book notes that it should be pruned back to around 12" above the ground, and only dead or defective growth should be pruned back to the stem or ground.

Deadheading - Remove faded flower stalks to promote continued blooming.

Early Spring - Prune to shape; remove dead parts.

  • After 1st season - Prune new spring growth (about ⅓ of green stalks)
  • Every 3 years - Shear to ~8" from ground to control plant size & promote new growth.

Later Summer / Early Fall (Before 1st frost) - Prune to encourage good circulation.

Fall - Prune

Protect for over wintering with a thick layer of mulch until Spring.

Integrated Pest & Pollinator Mgmt Notes

Harvesting

Once flowers have fully opened, and before they wilt.

Site Selection & Preparation

Propagation

  1. Softwood or semi-ripe cuttings from young plants in early Summer, or after flowering in Fall
  2. From seed collected from dry seedheads in Late Summer. Sow Seeds in Spring in small pots. Note: seeds from cultivars differ from the parent plant, and may not even grow.
