A quilt box can be used in the winter time to provide insulation for the colony, and to absorb humidity generated by the colony as it tries to stay warm.

Some versions of the quilt box provide an upper entrance for the bees. This allows the bees to take cleansing flights even when the snow may be blocking the entrance at the bottom of the hive.
These are shown in the box to the left with the yellow rotary closures which allow the openings to be closed off as necessary for the weather.
